(MaaS:Mobility as a Service)

Status:Vice President, Dean, and Professor
Professional Fields :
The International Solar Energy Society (ISES 1995) conference was held in Harare, Zimbabwe, and it was my first trip abroad. I was a graduate student (master student, age 24?) and wrote my thesis in English (it sounds cool, but I had my teacher correct most of it). Everything was new for me, but I was also surprised by many things!

Prof. Masaya Saito is Professor, Vice President, and Dean of the Faculty of Design at Sapporo City University, Japan. Since joining the university in 2001, he has been engaged in education and research in urban and architectural environmental design, with particular expertise in luminous, thermal, and air environments.
From 2003 to 2004, he served as a Visiting Research Fellow at Cornell University under the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Overseas Research Fellowship Program. There, he conducted research on thermal environments, ergonomics, and workplace productivity under the supervision of Prof. Alan Hedge.
His research interests include thermal comfort, exergy-based environmental design, and the concept of Cognitive Temperature, which explores how human perception, cognition, and experience influence environmental behavior. He has applied this framework to the development of healthy and resilient environments, including heatstroke prevention strategies, disaster shelter design, and healthy aging in cold-climate regions.
Prof. Saito has led numerous interdisciplinary and international research collaborations integrating design, health sciences, artificial intelligence, and environmental engineering. His recent projects include joint research initiatives with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He has also made significant contributions to animal welfare-oriented environmental design through long-term involvement in major zoo development projects, including those at Sapporo Maruyama Zoo and other zoological institutions across Japan.
He currently serves as a Director of the Japan Solar Energy Society and is actively involved in the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) and the Society of Heating, Air-Conditioning and Sanitary Engineers of Japan (SHASE).
Research Keywords: Thermal Comfort, Cognitive Temperature, Exergy, Environmental Design, Healthy Aging, Cold-Climate Design, Human-Environment Interaction, Animal Welfare Design, Sustainable Architecture.
